We’ve all heard the saying “as American as apple pie.” The first apple pie recipe, however, was printed in Europe back in 1381 by Geoffrey Chaucer. It had apples, figs, pears, raisins, spices, and saffron filling a pastry crust. Dutch apple pie recipes were similar to the English ones except that they added a scoop of ice cream on top. Thank you very much for giving us pie a la mode!
Still, apple pie is a favorite dessert in the United States and has become a symbol of all that is good, homey, and patriotic. We celebrate National Apple Pie Day twice a year, once in May and again in December.
Apple pie may be traditional, but we can be as creative as we want. We can make it gluten-free like this Vegan Apple of My Eye Pie with Gluten-Free Crust or even raw like this Raw Vegan Caramel Apple Pie. We can make the pie full-size or individually sized; top it with a pie crust like this Maple Drunk Apple Pie or not. We can add other fruits and veggies along with the apples like this Vegan Apple Pear Pie and Apple Pumpkin Pie Tart. We can top it with non-dairy ice cream or whipped cream like this Grilled Apple Pie with Vanilla Coconut Whipped Cream. Here are 10 takes on America’s favorite dessert, apple pie.
1. Butternut Squash Apple Pie
Apples have a new best buddy and it’s butternut squash. Sure, you’ve probably had butternut squash roasted or pureed into soup, but it really shines in this creamy and sweet autumnal Butternut Squash Apple Pie. Adding tart, juicy apples balances the sweet squash and really seals the deal on its deliciousness!
2. Cinnamon Apple Pear Pandowdy
Pandowdy is pie’s chronically messy twin sister: a deep-dish fruit pie with a thick top crust made of overlapping pieces of dough. This Cinnamon Apple Pear Pandowdy is a seasonal variation of apple pie that consists of apples and pears tossed with a generous amount of cinnamon. It’s a great dessert to make if you’re craving something pie-like but don’t want to commit to rolling out a double crust.
3. Apple Pie Stuffed Apples
Say “hello” to these gorgeous seven-ingredient Apple Pie Stuffed Apples. They’re so flavorful, they will make you want to do a happy dance around the kitchen. Is there anything better than a warm, cinnamon-y apple with a crunchy, maple-spiked granola topping? No, there absolutely is not.
4. Raw Apple Pie with Almonds, Coconut, and Ginger
Traditional baked apple pie can be quite an effort to make, but this Raw Apple Pie with Almonds, Coconut and Ginger is very quick, easy, and absolutely delicious! The flavors are incredible and it’s even more wonderful with fresh fruit or a dollop of coconut yogurt.
5. Cream Cheese Apple Galette
Galettes are just as delicious as pies, but way easier to make! And what better way to welcome fall than with an Apple Cream Cheese Galette? Instead of using store-bought vegan cream cheese, this version is homemade with coconut milk, cashew butter, and apple cider vinegar for tanginess.
6. Raw Apple Pie with Goji Berries and Nutmeg
Making traditional apple pie is great but this Raw Apple Pie with Goji Berries and Nutmeg is a different way to enjoy the classic dessert. You can even eat it as a breakfast dish since it is as nutritious as it is tasty! It is also lovely topped with coconut yogurt.
7. Individual Apple Pie Pastries
Have you ever dreamed of sitting at a quaint Parisian café, eating a delicious pastry and sipping the world’s finest espresso? Only with this recipe for Individual Apple Pie Pastries you can skip the expense and the long plane ride and create that feeling right at home. It won’t take you long to make, and doesn’t require many ingredients, but it will turn your home into a delightful café for you and your loved ones.
8. Raspberry Apple Crisp
Apples and raspberries are a match made in heaven. This Raspberry Apple Crisp has both fruits plus a crunchy crumble topping. The sweet raspberries balance the tart apples perfectly for a wonderful and colorful dessert.
9. Autumnal Apple Pie-lettes
A whole apple pie is wonderful, but these Autumnal Apple Pie-lettes are so cute and easy to make. Everyone gets their own little pie. One whiff of cinnamon and all you can think of is the apple pie you know you’re about to eat.
10. Apple Galette
This Apple Galette is the most rustic dessert you could make. There’s no mold or baking dish required; it’s completely formless. The shape depends on how you choose to lay the dough. What could be easier than that? Nothing! The seasoned apples are out in the open where everyone can gaze lovingly at them.
It’s no wonder we celebrate National Apple Pie Day twice a year! There are so many ways to make it, we need more days to celebrate this delicious pie. How will you make it? Tell us your favorite way to eat apple pie in the comments.
