Nut allergies are a real bummer for everyone involved. The person with the allergy has to be very careful and make sure they’re not eating nuts, which are in a whole lot of popular candies, cookies and snack items. Then, the people around them have to refrain from bringing nuts, which can be a pretty sad situation for a birthday party or potluck. But in these moments, you don’t have to refrain from enjoying traditionally nutty dishes, but instead eat old favorites in new, allergy-free ways. Here are six nut-free twists to popular dishes:

1. Crackers

Some crackers and snacks at the grocery store may contain nuts or be made in factories that also make products with nuts in them. Make you own nut-free, healthy crackers. Cheese spirulina, bananas, sesame seeds, coconut shreds, vanilla, coconut oil and Celtic salt for these Healthy Nut-Free Spirulina Vegan Sesame Bars.

2. Granola

3. Pesto

Pesto is a delicious, fragrant spread that makes pasta and pizza taste especially scrumptious. 4. Vegan Cheese

What makes a good, homemade vegan cheese so glorious in taste and texture is the use of nuts. In particular, cashews make great, non-dairy cheese. Without using nuts, you can use potatoes, olive oil and nutritional yeast instead. Try this Vegan Shredded Cheese recipe from Healthful Pursuit.

5. Butters

Nut butters are great protein and healthy fat options for vegans. For those who cannot eat nuts, try nut-free butters like pea butter, pumpkin seed butter and sunflower seed butter instead.

6. Sweet Treats

Cookies, crackers and candy bars sold in packages at the grocery store are often off-limit products for those with allergies. Traces of nuts can be hidden in packaged foods, and even if the food is nut-free, it may have been made in a factory where nut items are also going down the line.
