A recent study published in Nutrients explored how plant-based eating habits affect physical performance in older adults. Physical performance, essential for healthy aging and reducing disability risks, is typically measured through strength, mobility, and balance tests. These metrics are closely tied to muscle health, which naturally declines with age. Factors such as malnutrition and inactivity can worsen this decline, making diet a critical component of maintaining muscle function.
The researchers used data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, focusing on dietary habits and physical performance between 2015 and 2018. They assessed adherence to plant-based diets using three indices: overall, healthy, and unhealthy plant-based diet patterns. A short physical performance battery, grip strength, and walking speed were used to evaluate participants’ physical function.
Findings revealed that diets rich in nutritious plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts, correlated with better grip strength and physical function scores. However, consuming unhealthy plant-based foods like sugary drinks and processed snacks showed negative effects. For example, individuals in the healthiest diet group demonstrated grip strength values 1.14 kilograms higher than those with the least healthy diets.
Interestingly, while general plant-based diets did not significantly boost physical performance, those prioritizing high-quality, nutrient-dense foods had better results. These findings emphasize the importance of focusing on food quality rather than just the inclusion of plant-based items.
