Plastic cutting boards may seem like a practical choice—soft on knives, easy to clean, and widely available. But they could be adding something harmful to your meals: microplastics. A 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology revealed that chopping food on polyethylene cutting boards can release massive amounts of microplastics—over 79 million particles annually, to be exact.
And it’s not just one study sounding the alarm. Research in journals like Food Additives & Contaminants: Part A and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health also found microplastic contamination in meat and fish when plastic cutting boards were used during preparation. These tiny plastic particles are invisible to the naked eye but can end up in the food we eat—and ultimately, in our bodies.
Fortunately, there are better alternatives. Wooden cutting boards are long-lasting, knife-friendly, and, when cared for properly, more hygienic than you might think. Bamboo boards, endorsed by the USDA, offer similar benefits while being harder and less moisture-absorbent, which helps prevent bacterial buildup. Ceramic cutting boards are another option, though they can be brittle and tough on knives.

Swapping your plastic cutting board may seem like a small move, but it’s one that helps cut down on microplastic pollution—both in your kitchen and beyond.
If you care about your health, the planet, and the animals affected by plastic waste, now’s the time to make the switch. Choose a cutting board that lasts and doesn’t leach plastic into your food. Small changes add up—and your kitchen is a great place to start.
