Ingredients Needed

One of the main reasons I love this recipe so much is that you only need three simple ingredients! Here’s what you need:

  • old fashioned rolled oats – the base of the overnight oats, providing a hearty and chewy texture. Make sure to use certified gluten-free oats if needed.
  • milk – i like unsweetened almond milk, but feel free to use your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk (coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, soy milk, etc.). I would just recommend using an unsweetened milk as to not add too much extra sugar.
  • vanilla Greek yogurt – adds tons of creaminess, a boost of protein and a nice vanilla flavor. I used full-fat vanilla Greek yogurt, but 2% is also a good option. If you don’t have vanilla Greek yogurt, you can use plain Greek yogurt, but you might want to add a dash of vanilla extract and hint of sweetener like maple syrup or honey.

Optional Recipe Add-Ins

  • Fruit: Adding fresh fruit like bananas or berries (like blueberries or strawberries) to oats is always a good idea.
  • Nut butter: This is an excellent way to add some more protein to your oats. I typically add peanut butter or almond butter, but if you have nut allergy, seed butter (like sunflower seed butter or tahini) is another great option.
  • Protein powder: For more protein add 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder to the mixture before letting it set in the fridge. If you do add protein powder, you’ll probably need 1/4 cup extra milk, possibly more if you use a plant-based protein powder since it soaks up more liquid.
  • Chocolate: I’m all about sneaking a little chocolate into my breakfast, so if you’re craving a little more sweetness you can add chocolate chips or chopped chocolate to your oats. My favorite is Lily’s dark chocolate chips because they’re low in sugar, but any brand will work! Cacao nibs is also a great option.
  • Spices: Want to amp up the flavor of your oats? Try adding different spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ground ginger and/or nutmeg to these overnight oats.

How to Make Overnight Oats With Yogurt

Step 1: Add your oats, milk and yogurt to a large bowl and mix well. Place in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.

Step 2: Take your overnight oats out of the fridge, mix once more to meld the flavors, and enjoy with your favorite toppings!

Recipe Tips!

  • Add more liquid if needed: In the morning if your oats are too thick, feel free to add more almond milk to thin the mixture out.
  • In a rush? You should be able to get by with only letting the oats soak for 2 or so hours.

How to Meal Prep & Store Leftovers

This recipe makes one serving, but you can easily triple or quadruple the recipe to make a bigger batch for meal prep!

When stored in a sealed container (I personally like using wide mouth 16 oz Mason jars) in the refrigerator overnight oats should last for up to 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What yogurt is best to use?

I like using full-fat Greek yogurt for the most amount of creaminess and protein, but 2% Greek yogurt is another good option. I don’t recommend using non-fat Greek yogurt as it won’t add as much moisture to the overnight oats and it sometimes has fillers which could change the consistency. I used Nounos Creamery Vanilla Bean Greek Yogurt (which is so good btw!), but I also love Wallaby and Siggi’s.

Can I use instant oats or steel cut oats instead of rolled oats?

it’s best to use old fashioned rolled oats for overnight oats as they hold up better and provide a chewier texture. instant oats can become too mushy when soaked overnight. Steel cut oats also don’t work well because they don’t absorb liquid the same way rolled oats do. If you’re looking for a recipe with steel cut oats try my overnight steel cut oats instead.
