A team of teenagers from Turkey are runners-up in The Earth Prize for their innovative solution to crop failure caused by Climate change. Beyza, 17, and Diyar, 18, alongside their fellow inventors on Team Ceres, developed a “drought-defying plasma-powered crop solution” to address the severe agricultural challenges faced by their community.
Beyza and Diyar’s inspiration stems from the struggles of their region, historically known as Mesopotamia. “In Türkiye, we are living the effects of climate change,” Beyza explains. ” Mesopotamia, where agriculture and civilization were born, but now people are struggling with Climate change and drought.”
Their solution, named “Plantzma,” leverages plasma technology to enhance crop resilience and enrich irrigation water. Priced at €176, a single device can prevent crop loss by up to 60% and reduce fertilizer usage by up to 40%, making it a cost-effective and efficient tool for farmers. The device uses low-temperature plasma to treat seeds before cultivation, improving their germination rate and resistance to environmental stressors. It also treats irrigation water, turning it into a nitrogen-enriched plasma fertilizer that boosts plant growth.
The World Economic Forum projects a significant increase in crop failures due to Climate change, which can devastate farmers’ livelihoods and food security. Team Ceres aims to mitigate these effects with their easy-to-use Plantzma device, which requires just a few button clicks to operate.
Beyza and Diyar’s dedication to their project extends beyond the competition. Beyza hopes to study environmental engineering and political science, while Diyar plans to major in electrical engineering at NYU Abu Dhabi. They both envision a future where their plasma technology is accessible to rural communities worldwide, helping to combat the adverse effects of Climate change on agriculture.
