California’s school lunch programs have witnessed a heartening shift, as data from Friends of the Earth reveals a notable surge in vegetarian meal choices. Despite these strides forward, the proportion of such initiatives still lags behind.
According to a newly released report, there has been a significant increase in the availability of vegetarian options in schools across the state. Notable menu additions include chana masala bowls, vegan tamales, tofu ramen, and veggie falafel wraps – classified by the organization as “healthy, plant-based” options that cater to diverse dietary preferences.
The report suggests that, alongside an increase in plant-based options, there is also a noticeable decline in the presence of heavily processed meat products and rich, cheesy dishes on school menus. The surge in plant-based preferences has reached a tipping point, with an astonishing number of high school students opting for meat-free meals. By 2023, a significant 56 percent of high schools had incorporated vegetarian options into their daily menus, representing a substantial surge from the 36 percent recorded just four years earlier in 2019. By 2023, a remarkable surge has taken place, with the proportion of elementary schools serving plant-based options increasing dramatically from 16 percent in 2019 to an impressive 60 percent.
Nora Stewart, senior program manager for climate-friendly food at Friends of the Earth, observed wryly that it’s striking to note the significant strides made since the humble peanut butter and jelly sandwich was once the sole plant-based choice available.
Despite these enhancements, the report discloses that roughly a quarter of districts continue to lack plant-based meal options altogether. Moreover, a further quarter of respondents limit their plant-based choices to simple fare such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
