A severe listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meat has resulted in another fatality, bringing the total number of deaths to three. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the latest victim was from Virginia, following previous deaths in Illinois and New Jersey. The affected individuals, aged between 32 and 94, have all been hospitalized, and the total number of people sickened now stands at 43 across 13 states.
The outbreak, which began in May, has prompted a massive recall of Boar’s Head products. Initially, 200,000 pounds of meat were pulled from shelves, but this figure was later increased to seven million pounds. The contaminated products were traced back to the company’s facility in Jarratt, Virginia, specifically its Strassburger Brand Liverwurst. The recall, expanded on July 31, includes 71 products listed on the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service website.
Boar’s Head, a long-established company based in Sarasota, Florida, has yet to comment on the situation. In response to the outbreak, the CDC has advised consumers to clean their refrigerators and any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products. Retailers are also being urged to conduct thorough cleanings of their deli counters to prevent further contamination.
Legal action has already been taken against Boar’s Head and the food retailers carrying its products, including a proposed class action lawsuit alleging insufficient customer warnings about the outbreak.
