Yes, pickle ice cream! No, I’m not crazy! It’s weird and it’s oddly wonderful all at the same time. Somehow it just works.

Pickle Ice Cream

Oh, pickle ice cream. You have not been an easy one to conquer. I tried simmering cream with herbs, tried adding just the brine (good, but not as fun), and finally tried simply adding very finely minced pickles at the end of the churning process.

Plenty of sweet, creamy ice cream flavor with a tangy tart bite from those pickles. We’ve shared this ice cream with so many people now! It’s a hard one to describe and about half the people kept tasting it to decide if it’s a love or a hate thing for them.

My friend and I decided the ice cream was a win and that the chewy little pickle bits were so unexpectedly fun at the end of each bite. Would we eat this every week? Probably not, but live a little and have some fun in the form of pickle ice cream!

Unusual Ice Cream Flavors

And if experimental ice cream flavors ding your chimes, you should try these other combinations we have here on BFK. Some are wild, others are just wildly wondrous or over the top!

In the delightfully over the top category, we have Peach Cobbler Ice Cream. With creamy vanilla ice cream filled with chunks of peach cobbler and cinnamon crust and syrupy peaches in every bite, this ice cream is irresistible.

And coming in as an odd-sounding but positively delightful and divine offering, we have three great flavors.

First, Grape Nut Ice Cream. Creamy sweet vanilla ice cream filled with crunchy, nutty grape nuts? Yes, please! This grape nut ice cream has been an absolute win with family and friends.

Dr Pepper ice cream blends the nostalgia of a soda fountain drink with the indulgence of freshly churned ice cream. The creamy texture balances perfectly with the unique soda taste, creating a refreshing frozen treat.

Creamy, cool sweetness collides with spicy, zesty heat in Jalapeno Ice Cream, creating a surprising fusion of smooth, rich dairy with the fiery kick of jalapeño peppers.

Now I’m prepared for a little side-eye on this next option, but it is strangely appealing! Have you heard of Mac and Cheese Ice Cream? As the creamy, sweet ice cream melts in your mouth, the flavor softens and leaves you with just a hint of savory flavor. Is it for everyone? Nope. But it has been a huge win with a surprising number of people!

Pickle Flavored Ice Cream

To make today’s fun-loving pickle dessert, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • heavy cream
  • whole milk
  • sugar
  • vanilla extract
  • dried dill weed
  • dill pickles or minced dill pickle relish

If you decide to mince your own dill pickles instead of buying ready made minced dill pickle relish, please take care to mince it quite finely. You don’t want to bite into a rock solid pickle chunk in your ice cream!

Pickles and Ice Cream

Whisk together the cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, and dried dill. Pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

When the mixture is almost done churning, add the finely minced pickles. Transfer to an airtight container and place in the freezer until ready to serve.

The most popular question I get is whether it’s possible to make ice cream without a machine. The answer is YES. You can make ice cream without a machine. Find the full directions here!

With over 100 ice cream recipes here to choose from, there’s sure to be an ice cream for everyone! If you’re new to making ice cream, the best and easiest vanilla ice cream is a great place to start.

These are my favorite inexpensive containers for storing ice cream. They’re perfect for gifting (who doesn’t love homemade ice cream?) storage, re-using, etc. I write the flavors on the lids with a sharpie and it washes off with dish soap.

I have more ice cream scoops than I can keep track of at this point and I definitely play favorites. This ice cream scoop does the best job ever of cutting through firm ice cream and still delivers a pretty scoop. It gets bonus points for being one of the least expensive scoops I own as well.
