This new policy stipulates that plant-based options will be the default at any city event where food is offered. Animal-based products will still be available but only upon specific request. This shift is part of West Hollywood’s broader strategy to embrace more sustainable and ethical food choices, highlighting the negative environmental impacts associated with the animal agriculture industry.
The decision aligns with growing scientific evidence supporting the environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. According to the city council’s resolution, plant-based meals are associated with a 63% lower carbon footprint compared to their animal-derived counterparts. The resolution references data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change, which notes that adopting more plant-based diets is among the most effective actions individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprints.
The council also expressed a commitment to sourcing these plant-based offerings from locally owned businesses whenever possible, further supporting the local economy and reducing transportation emissions.
The policy, enthusiastically supported by animal advocacy groups like Mercy For Animals, reflects a growing trend in public policy that supports environmental stewardship through dietary choices. Mercy For Animals’ CEO and president, Leah Garcés, praised West Hollywood for setting a precedent that might inspire other cities to consider similar initiatives.
Earlier this year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors adopted a similar initiative, deciding to increase the availability of plant-based foods in county-run facilities to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
West Hollywood’s decision does not affect co-sponsored or private events held within city limits but sets a strong example for public and private organizations alike to consider more sustainable, health-conscious, and compassionate food options at their events. This landmark resolution by West Hollywood marks a significant step towards integrating sustainability into everyday practices, demonstrating a practical approach to combating Climate change at the local level.
